Online Since Jan 1989
The Library Network has conducted online service activities since Jan 1989,
when our 24Hr Bulletin Board Service (BBS) first went to air. The BBS
service was hobby orientated (similar to amateur radio). As such
subscription charges aided the telephone and running costs, but were never
intended and did not shown profit. The 'BBS' orientation has always been
towards the Computer Communications Hobbyist and Enthusist, never towards
commercialisation or the Businessman. Internet also existed prior to 1989,
but until almost 1995 was heavily orientated towards Education and
Military use, and directly against commercialisation and consumer or
commercial use.
The Internet Potential
On Internet, commercial forces existed in the background, but without a
suitable environment were all but benign. This was going to change.
Tiggering a potential for major change in internet usage and acceptance,
was the creation and arrival of the HyperText Markup Language (HTML). With
it's graphical presentation and simple control scripts, the 'Web' took off
quickly. Commercial usage of the network began a continuing climb, as
business and sales people world wide began to see the real potential. The
Internet 'proper' was born.
Service Launch
Beginning in April 1996, we expanded into the internet service business,
with full business orientation. It was after all exactly the same
activity we'd been enjoying for years from a hobbyist perspective. We
easily claimed to be over qualified for the general System Operator tasks
involved, and indeed that was proven to be largely accurate, when comparing
the performance and technical levels of many of the existing service
providers of the time.
Current Operation
Since then in reality little has changed. The stock market discovered the Internet,
then got shy. Major corporations took on the ISP business, with somewhat mixed results.
A good example are Mobile Phone companies - who offer financing and marketing in excess but little else.
The Telstra monstor has unfortunately dominated the Australian environment, with huge negative longterm ramifactions for the industry.
For real ISPs operations continue however, the internet is an extremely interesting place to be. You're welcome to join us..
